Vision Insurance & Benefit Options

If you’ve signed up for a vision insurance plan through your employer, you’ve already paid for your vision care through your paycheck, and benefits for most vision plans start at the first of the year. There’s no better time than now to take advantage of your benefits.

Three Easy Steps to Using Your Vision Plan

Step 1
Go to your insurance carrier’s website and log in to your account. Check your plan’s details for benefits, making note of any out-of-pocket costs you may be responsible for. Many carriers list this information in a “Benefit Plan Sheet.”

Step 2
Find a care provider. Meijer Optical accepts most major vision plans. Check the list here or ask one of our opticians if you’re covered.

Step 3
Get your exam and order your corrective lenses.
Our opticians are here to maximize your vision plan’s benefits and help you get the perfect pair of eyeglasses or contact lenses.

What Your Vision Plan Covers

Plans vary based on your employer and the insurance carrier, but most cover a variety of services and products:

Annual eye exam – screening for prescription changes and detection of eye conditions
Update to lenses – applied to the purchase of new contact lenses OR eyeglasses, usually annually*
Update to frames – applied to the purchase of new eyeglass frames, usually once per year or once every 2 years*

*Coverage for frames, contact lenses and eyeglass lenses vary by plan. Most vision insurance plans cover up to $130 on contact lens supplies OR eyeglass frames. Standard eyeglass lenses are covered at 100%, but there may be additional out-of-pocket expenses for certain lens options or specialty lenses. Some of the larger insurance carriers have negotiated discounted rates with providers for these types of options.
